Austin Texas Yoga Trivia
If Austin can embrace the title of 'Live Music Capitol of the World', I think a strong case can be made for Austin's emerging role as Yoga Capitol of the World!
As of September, 2009...
Texas has 5 yoga teacher training schools registered with the Yoga Alliance. All 5 schools are located in Austin.
Austin has 229 registered yoga teachers, 2nd only to New York with 502 teachers. San Francisco is a distant 3rd with 169 registered teachers and Los Angeles has 162 teachers.
But when you divide the number of registered teachers by the population of each city, Austin has more registered yoga teachers per/capita than any city in America, over 5 times the density of teachers as New York, and 30% more teachers than the next closest city (San Francisco).
The highest current level of experience recognized by the Yoga Alliance is designated E500-T500. Austin has 14 teachers with this level of recognition. New York also has 14. San Francisco and Los Angeles both have 11 each.
The Austin Yoga Teachers founded the Free Day of Yoga, in 2000. This anual event, held each year on Labor Day regularly draws aproximately 3000 students to Austin yoga studios for free yoga classes. This is an opportunity for Austin Yoga Teachers to show their thanks for the wonderful yoga community that supports them as teachers. In the past few years, the Free Day of Yoga has spread to other cities including Houston and Dallas as well as smaller communities and towns. If you would like to start a Free Day of Yoga in your own community, please email Charles MacInerney for more information on how the Austin Yoga Teachers can help you start your own event.
